Vampire Fangs and Fake Teeth: Are They Safe for Your Smile?
October 24, 2025 9:00 amFake fangs and monster teeth can take a Halloween costume from “fun” to “fantastic.” Whether you’re going for a creepy vampire look or a goofy monster grin, costume teeth are a big hit this time of year. But before you pop in those fangs, it’s worth asking — are they actually safe for your smile?
At Family Dentistry of Bedford, Dr. Jeff Davis wants you to enjoy the Halloween spirit without any real-life dental scares. Here’s what to keep in mind before you sink your teeth into the season.
How Costume Teeth Fit (and What to Watch Out For)
Most fake fangs or creature teeth are made of plastic or resin and fit over your natural teeth. Some sets use a soft moldable plastic you warm in water to shape, while others rely on adhesives to hold them in place.
If you do need adhesive, be careful — only use products labeled non-toxic and made for oral use. Superglue, craft glue, or even some “DIY” fang kits can irritate your gums or damage dental work like veneers or crowns.
Risks Lurking Beneath the Surface
A few hours in costume won’t hurt, but wearing fake teeth too long (or using a poorly fitting pair) can cause real problems. Some of the most common include:
- Gum irritation or soreness from sharp edges or tight fitting plastic.
 - Chipped enamel or dental work if you bite down too hard while wearing them.
 - Bacteria buildup if the teeth aren’t cleaned properly after use.

And remember — don’t eat or drink with fangs in. Even Dracula takes his out for dinner. Biting into food or candy while wearing them can lead to cracks, stains, or broken plastic that’s tough on your natural teeth.
Safe (and Smile-Friendly) Halloween Habits
To make sure your spooky smile doesn’t turn into a post-Halloween dental visit:
- Take your fangs out before eating or drinking. They’re made for show, not chewing.
 - Clean them before and after use. A gentle soap and cool water is enough — no toothpaste or harsh chemicals.
 - Store them in a clean, dry container. Bacteria love moisture.
 - Remove aligners or retainers first. Costume teeth and Invisalign® trays don’t mix well.

If you do notice gum tenderness, irritation, or a chipped tooth afterward, we’re here to help with gentle restorative care and same-day emergency treatment when needed.
